42nd Street Pete's Signature Performer Series: John Holmes Collection (2-Disc) Review

Here's a 2 disc set featuring one full length feature, DEAR PAM, along with ten short loops from the 1970's in which John Holmes appears. Dear Pam is a great spoof about an advice columnist who, well, shall we say ventures away from her moral standards as the film moves along. Also includes trailers.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes - The Hound of the Baskervilles [VHS]

The Return of Sherlock Holmes - The Hound of the Baskervilles [VHS] Review

This nearly two-hour Granada Television production of the most popular Sherlock Holmes tale--adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1902 novel--stars series regular Jeremy Brett as the Baker Street detective and Edward Hardwicke as his close ally, Dr. John Watson. A thrilling blend of detective yarn and Gothic horror, The Hound concerns the apparent return of an old curse upon the Baskerville family in the terrifying form of a gigantic killer hound. Fans of Hardwicke get an opportunity to see his Watson on a solo mission for part of this story, though Brett--easily the best of all screen actors to play the sleuth--is never far from the narrative. The supporting cast is very good, and the beast itself, revealed in a famously terrifying finale, is indeed a spooky revelation. --Tom Keogh

Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: Set 2

Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: Set 2 Review

Crime abounded in late Victorian and Edwardian times-from the streets of London to the country houses of the nobility; from the royal apartments of Vienna to the hotel rooms of quiet Copenhagen. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective took on many of the era's crooks, killers, blackmailers, and schemers-but so did the fictional sleuths of other celebrated writers of the time.

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes - The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax [VHS]

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes - The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax [VHS] Review

A bit low on funds, Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke) has to take a scaled-back holiday in the English countryside, where he meets the charming Lady Frances (a nice performance by Cheryl Campbell) and then worries after she vanishes from sight. As in The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes puts Watson on the case and instructs him from afar (then, of course, criticizes him for committing every "possible blunder"). The kidnapping suspect is a notorious con man and thief, but even knowing that doesn't tell Holmes (who arrives in time to save Watson from probable murder by a mysterious, bearded man) what he and the good doctor urgently need to know: Where is the missing Lady Frances? The suspense is strong and the acting superb in this excellent installment from Granada Television's long-running Sherlock Holmes series. --Tom Keogh
