Adam Bede

Adam Bede Review

Adam Bede Feature

  • Beneath the tranquil surface of George Eliot's tale, passions run deep and the bitter gall of betrayal is all too prevalent. Adam Bede is a hard-working carpenter, with his heart set on marrying his sweetheart, the pretty dairymaid, Hetty Sorrel. Unfortunately, Hetty's affections are captured by the local squire, Arthur Donnithorne.Running Time: 102 min. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA
Adam Bede is the very definition of a brash young man. George Eliot's young English country hero is headstrong and arrogant, and sees the world in black and white--not unlike his 18th-century countrymen, living and (barely) breathing by the strict moral code of the day. In this excellent 1991 BBC adaptation, Adam is played by the appealing Iain Glen, who shows he's as comfortable in a sweeping period drama as he is in popcorn fare like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or the Resident Evil films. Adam is torn by love and commitment, and once he sets his sights on the fetching farmgirl Hetty (Patsy Kensit), he's convinced Hetty's love for his rich acquaintance Arthur is a sham, and uses force to get Arthur to break off their relationship. But what Adam has set in motion, the world will be reeling from for a very long time: in the wake of his impetuous act lie despair, heartbreak, a secret pregnancy, thoughts of suicide, and death. And still, the moral order must be upheld. Glen shows Adam slowly but truly growing up, realizing the consequences of his actions. (It doesn't hurt that he ends up with the lovely Dinah, played by the fabulous Susannah Harker of House of Cards and the 1995 Pride and Prejudice--why on earth has this talented young woman not become a huge star?) Viewing the characters' transgressions through 21st century eyes can make some of the plot lines feel remote--nearly unbelievable--but the all-too-human struggles of people trying to do the right thing will always ring true. --A.T. Under the watchful eye of DCI James Langton (Ciarán Hinds), she joins a team investigating a series of brutal and shocking murders. They started eight years ago, and the body count - all prostitutes and drug users - was up to six, but now a seventh body has been found. This time the victim is a beautiful, young student, with the murderer no less ugly in his slaughter. Is every victim innocent, or are some more innocent than others? In Above Suspicion 2 (2010): The Red Dahlia DC Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly) is back, reunited with the inimitable DCI James Langton (Ciarán Hinds), to face her most challenging and terrifying case yet. When the body of a young woman is discovered, sadistically mutilated and drained of blood, it would seem an ominous re-enactment of the infamously unsolved murder from 1940s Los Angeles, dubbed the 'Black Dahlia'.

Sherlock Holmes, Volume 2 - TV Classics

Sherlock Holmes, Volume 2 - TV Classics Review

Produced in Europe for American audiences, the "Sherlock Holmes" 1954 TV series captures the essence of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters and themes. Ronald Howard (son of film star Leslie Howard) stars as the intensely analytical Holmes, aided by Dr. Watson (H. Marion Crawford) and antagonized by the Inspector Lestrade (Archie Duncan).

The Case of the Night Train Riddle: A boy disappears from his train compartment after fighting with his father. The child's governess believes that he has run away, but Holmes suspects something more sinister. A series of clues leads him to a nearby circus, where the boy hangs on the brink of death.

The Mother Hubbard Case: Gentlemen disappear throughout London, vanishing without a trace. Their corpses turn up in unoccupied houses, victims of poison. Holmes suggests that the murders may have something to do with a lost child, and endangers his own life to uncover the killer.

The Case of the Unlucky Gambler: A young boy turns up on Baker Street, pleading with Holmes to find his missing father. The detective deduces that the man is a gambler on the run from his creditors, and he and Watson descend into the world of back rooms and betting houses in search of clues. They receive news that the hunted man has committed suicide, yet Holmes refuses to give up hope.

The Case of the Cunningham Heritage: The beginnings of Holmes' partnership with Watson are explored in this first episode of the series. Watson moves into Baker Street after his return from military service, and is amazed to discover his roomate is a detective. Holmes invites the doctor to accompany him on an investigation - a man stabbed to death and his fiance found in posession of the murder weapon. Although the victim's family seems convinced of the woman's guilt, the detective demonstrates his deductive powers by uncovering the real culprit.
